Do well.

When you succeed, that can have a beneficial effect on those around you as well as yourself. Learn ways to up your game.

Do good.

You can have a positive ripple effect when you:

Pay your workers fairly every day. Donate a portion of your income each year. Look for opportunities to support fair housing initiatives. What goes around comes around and, when you help your community, everyone benefits. Including you.

  1. PAY FAIRLY. Make sure you pay your support people fair rates. The minimum hourly wage in Maine to afford a decent home at fair-market value is $20/hour, if earned for 40 hours a week. https://www.opportunityhome.org/campaign/maine/

  2. VOTE. Vote in favor of affordable housing initiatives in your area. People need places to live — and not just for altruistic reasons. If you want to break it down to what’s in it for you, where will your cleaner / groundskeeper / caretaker / neighbor live?

  3. DONATE. Large industry participants can and should contribute to affordable housing efforts if not outrightly provide labor and materials. So can we. Learn more at Maine Affordable Housing Coalition, and give a portion of your increased earnings to MAHC directly in your annual charitable contributions.

  4. PETITION. Sign the HOMEforME Pledge. Let us know of other opportunities that you believe may benefit the greater good in Maine.

  5. REINVEST. If you’re in a position to do so, invest in housing that can be part of affordable housing in your community. State and Federal government can do a lot, but they can’t do it all. Taxpayers are not going to solve the bigger problem; it’s going to take the private community to step up and contribute to solving the need.

    1. In addition,

  6. CO-INVEST. Crowdfunding.

  7. KEEP HOPE ALIVE. There are good people working on affordable housing in Maine — with progressive environmental practices. It’s exciting, ground-breaking, market-leading work. The Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) at the University of Maine has proven that it can print (yes, print!) houses using renewable Maine resources — that are also entirely recyclable.
